Brief Overview
Required to work for Barkwell Plumbing and Heating Ltd. One of the largest plumbing companies in the South West, who specialise on large-scale projects for major house builders, property developers, housing associations and local authorities on developments that typically involve the construction of new houses.
This is a fantastic opportunity to join a well-established business.
Successful applicants will complete an advanced (level 3) apprenticeship in domestic Gas Engineering.
Gas engineering involves the safe installation, commission, decommission and the ongoing service and repair of gas appliances in a domestic setting.
Appliances can include, but are not limited to, a range of work categories such as central heating boilers, unvented hot water storage, ducted air heaters, cookers, space heaters and meters.
Roles in gas engineering will include explaining how installations and appliances work, providing energy efficiency advice, and ensuring customer service excellence at all times.
Gas engineering operates strictly within the requirements of health and safety legislation.

Apprenticeship summary
Weekly wage
Apprenticeship wage for the first 12 months (currently £4.81 per hour), with mileage allowance.
Followed by National Minimum Wage from month 13, with mileage allowance.
Typical working hours
Approximately 40 hours a week. Monday – Friday.
At busy times of the year there will be a requirement to work late and work weekends. Working hours are not fixed so a flexible attitude is essential.

Apprenticeship duration
18 months, with 3 months for End Point Assessments.
Your time will be split between working on new housing developments and our training centre, Moor Training Ltd.
What will the apprentice be doing?
You will work as part of a team, installing, commissioning, decommissioning, servicing and maintenance of both basic and complex domestic gas systems and appliances.
As part of the apprenticeship you will also learn and undertake plumbing and heating installations within new homes from start to finish and maintenance of such systems.
Your team will include a Gas Safe Registered Mentor, a Contract Manager and small group of experienced Plumbers/Gas Engineers.
Your skills will build over time and will over the apprenticeship duration include:
• Gas, plumbing and heating basic principles and processes
• Installation, commission and de-commission of gas/plumbing/heating pipework and appliances
• Tightness testing and purging of pipework
• Combustion and properties of gas
• Building services and structures
• Scientific principles in gas utilisation
• Cold, hot water and central heating system installation
• Copper tube bending and the different methods of jointing
• Low carbon steel pipe bending and jointing
• Plastic pressure pipe for hot, cold and central heating systems installation and jointing
• Bathroom suite installation complete with all hot, cold and waste pipe work
• Servicing and maintenance procedures
Roles in gas engineering are physical in nature, and may involve lifting and moving of equipment, working at heights and working in confined spaces.

A lucrative career within Barkwell Plumbing and Heating, with progression and development opportunities and potential earnings of £30,000 to £90,000 per annum.

About the Training Provider
Your training will be undertaken by Moor Training Ltd. The successful candidate will be required to attend Moor Training for approximately one week every month to work towards the completion of the Level 3 Gas Engineering Operative qualification.
