Men's Health and the Internet
MEN'S HEALTH AND THE INTERNET
The iPhone was born in 2007. Those born in the same year will turn 16 this year. They've grown up with a high-performance computer in their pocket. What are the implications for men's health?
That's the question we're going to be looking at for this year's Men's Health Week. Clearly there are some health benefits to being able to access health information or deliver and receive health services online but what are the downsides? For example, we'll be developing new information resources on internet-fulled addictions.
Dopamine-delivery device
Dopamine is one of the key chemical messenger in your brain. It creates feelings of pleasure and reward and plays a role in concentration, memory and what we find interesting. In short, dopamine makes us feel good and we like a hit of it from time to time.
The iphone is a dopamine-delivery device that is always to hand. Every single app you use on it knows this full well and is designed to keep you using it. The potential for addiction is obvious. Even an 'addiction' to a pretty benign app is going to cost us time and the attention we could have devoted to more meaningful things. But what about when it starts costing money, relationships, work… ?

The theme for Mental Health Awareness
Week in 2023 is Anxiety.
Anxiety is an important human emotion, but in some circumstances it can get out of hand and become a mental health problem.
A lot of different things can contribute to feelings of anxiety such as exams, a new job, or a big life change. It’s an emotion people often experience around money and not being able to meet life’s basic needs so the current cost-of-living crisis is starting to have severe effects on the nations mental health.
Anxiety is one of the most common mental health
problems people face. According to our recent survey, 25% of all adults feel so anxious it stops them from doing the things they want to, some or all of the time.
The good news is that by focusing on anxiety for Mental Health Awareness Week, we want to improve public understanding of anxiety and share some of the things that can help prevent it from becoming a problem.

April is stress awareness month.
10 tips for managing stress
Stress can affect us all – whether it’s an event that’s affected us or we’re feeling under too much pressure. These tips can help.
1-Exercise. Go for a walk; it will release natural feel-good endorphins in your brain.
2-Reduce smoking and alcohol. Try and cut right back as they actually make problems worse.
3-Eat well. Eat a healthy diet, including fruit and vegetables, and drink enough water.
4-Prioritise sleep. Cut down on caffeine and screen time.
5-Practise mindfulness. When you wake up focus on your breathing for a few minutes. Notice how you feel.
6-Chill out. Do things that you enjoy and make you feel relaxed.
7-Be your own cheerleader. Set realistic goals and reward your achievements.
8-Communicate. Know when to say no to things, and don’t take on too much.
9-Take a break. A change of scenery can help you to relax and gain perspective.
10-Seek support. Friends and family can help, or you could join a club, take a course or volunteer.

For International Women's Day and beyond, let's all fully #EmbraceEquity.
Equity isn't just a nice-to-have, it's a must-have.
A focus on gender equity needs to be part of every society's DNA.
And it's critical to understand the difference between equity and equality.
