Face Fit - Correct Fitting and Testing Procedures

Who is it suitable for?

Where respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is used as a control measure under Health and Safety Legislation, it is vital that the selected RPE is adequate and suitable.

To ensure that the selected RPE has the potential to provide adequate protection for individual wearers, the Approved Codes of Practice (ACoPs) supporting the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), the Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR) and the Control of Lead at Work Regulations  (CLaW) stipulate that tight-fitting RPE must be fit tested as part of the selection process.

A tight-fitting facepiece is a full face mask, a half mask, or a filtering facepiece (commonly referred to as a disposable mask).

Fit testing is a method of checking that a tight-fitting facepiece matches the wearer’s facial features and seals adequately to their face.

Many masks rely on a good seal against the face so that, when you breathe air in, it is drawn into the filter material where the air is cleaned. If there are any gaps around the edges of the mask, ‘dirty’ air will pass through these gaps and into the individuals lungs. It is therefore very important that masks are correctly fitted and checked for a good fit every time.

Facial hair (stubble and beards) make it impossible to get a good seal of the mask to the face. If clean-shaven when wearing tight-fitting masks, this will help prevent leakage of contaminated air around the edges of the mask and into the lungs.

If there are reasons for having a beard (eg for religious reasons), alternative forms of RPE, that do not rely on a tight fit to the face, are available.

Moor Training Ltd offer face fit testing suitable for half mask, or a filtering facepiece (commonly referred to as a disposable mask). This type of fit testing is not suitable for full face masks.

We will fit test individuals on respiratory protective equipment (RPE) that has been issued to them, and delegates MUST bring their own issued RPE to be tested.

If more than one type of RPE is used for different tasks all RPE should be brought for fit testing.

Delegates must arrive with no facial hair (stubble/beard) to ensure the fit test can be carried out accurately or the test will be cancelled.

If a delegate fails a fit test with their own RPE, Moor Training hold stock of disposable respirators which can be used as an alternative to re-test.

Each fit test duration will last approximately 15 minutes.

Course Programme

Each fit test includes:

  • Brief explanation of the need for fit testing
  • Explanation of the fit test procedure
  • Coaching on getting the best fit with RPE
  • Fit test
  • Certificate of fit test

On successful completion delegates will receive a Moor Training Ltd certificate valid for 1 year

Please note: if a delegate loses or gains weight, undergoes any substantial dental work, develop any facial changes (scars, moles etc) around the face seal area or if the type of RPE used changes a re-test is required.

Entry Requirements

Delegates must arrive with no facial hair (stubble/beard) to ensure the fit test can be carried out accurately or the test will be cancelled and bring their own respiratory protective equipment (RPE).

The test takes around 15 minutes and involves wearing a hood over the head and shoulders.

The tester sprays a bitter tasting solution into the hood whilst the delegate carries out a series of exercises, i.e. turning head from side to side. If the wearer can taste the solution then the mask does not fit correctly.
